What is Renton Select Basketball?
Renton Select Basketball is a competitive and developmental program for male and female student-athletes in grades 2 - 11 (preferably) in the Renton School District service area. The Renton Select Basketball program is designed to provide student-athletes with a competitive basketball environment and experience, while allowing the opportunity for learning, development, and growth.
Is the Renton Select Basketball program affiliated with Renton High School or the Renton School District?
No. The Renton Select Basketball program is an independent community based non-profit organization.
Who can play for the Renton Select Basketball program?
The Renton Select Basketball program is designed for student-athletes (preferably) residing in the Renton School District service area. Student-athletes not residing in the Renton School District service area ARE welcome and allowed to try-out and participate if selected.
When are try-outs? How do I register my student-athlete(s) to tryout? Does my student-athlete need to attend each day of try-outs? What if my student-athlete cannot attend either day of try-outs?
The Renton Select Basketball program tryout information can be found under the Renton Select tab under tryouts. To register your student-athlete(s) for tryouts please visit www.rentonbasketball.com/try-outs. It is strongly recommended that student-athlete's attend both days of try-outs to ensure the best opportunity of potentially being selected. If your student-athlete has a conflict and is unable to attend either day of try-outs please contact firstname.lastname@example.org and the Renton Select board will review it on a case by case basis.
How are teams selected? Can my student-athlete play up?
For each grade level there will be two days of tryouts consisting of basic skill drills and scrimmaging. Renton Select Basketball staff and coaches will evaluate each student-athlete during try-outs. Following the second tryout, the Renton Select Basketball staff and grade level coaches will collectively select the team(s) and families will be notified via e-mail if their student-athlete did or did not make the team. Each student-athlete must tryout at their grade level. If a student-athlete has talent that exceeds their grade level, the placement will be at the discretion of the Renton Select board.
How many teams are there? How many student-athletes per team?
The number of teams will be dependent upon the number of student-athletes that tryout and are selected to a team per grade level. Each Renton Select Basketball team will have a minimum of eight (8) and maximum of eleven (11) student-athletes per team. If there are enough student-athletes to form more than one competitive team at a grade level, then additional teams may be formed.
How are teams classified? What leagues/tournaments does Renton Select Basketball play in? Do teams travel?
If there is more than one team in a grade level, they will be classified as "Black," "Red," or "White." Renton Select Basketball believes in and promotes growth, development, and opportunity for student-athletes, therefore, we do not classify teams as "a," "b," or "c." Renton Select Basketball staff works collaboratively with coaches to determine appropriate placement of teams in leagues and/or tournaments. Note, the availability of leagues/tournaments will vary for 2nd and 3rd grade teams. There is potential for each team to travel, this will happen on a team-by-team basis, and be communicated in as far advance as possible. Note, traveling tournaments may entail additional costs that will not be covered in the Renton Select Basketball participation fee.
Is there a playing time protocol?
Yes. The playing time protocol is as follows:
2nd - 5th Grade: One Quarter
6th - 8th Grade: 6 Minutes
2nd - 5th Grade: One Quarter
6th - 17U: No Playing Time Protocol
2nd - 17U: No Playing Time Protocol
In all seasons, our coaches will make a diligent and concerted effort to afford student-athletes "meaningful" playing time during each game. Note, during extra tournaments (outside of the ones provided via the Renton Select participation fee) there is not a playing time protocol - this applies to all grade levels in all seasons.
How many seasons are there?
The Renton Select Basketball program offers three seasons. A winter season from October - February/March for 2nd - 8th grade, a spring season from March - May for 2nd grade - 17U, and a summer season from May - July for select grades (15U - 17U - July Only). The summer season is designed to be highly competitive, there will not be a tryout for the summer season, and rosters will be formed at the coaches discretion. The Renton Select board will decide which teams continue on for the summer season.
When and where are the practices?
The Renton Select Basketball program practice schedule will be determined following tryouts and be available under the Renton Select tab by selecting the desired grade level.
What is the cost to participate in the Renton Select Basketball program? What is included? Is there a payment plan available? Are there scholarships?
