What is Renton Select Basketball?
Renton Select Basketball is a competitive and developmental program for male student-athletes in grades 2 - 12 (preferably) in the Renton School District service area. The Renton Select Basketball program is designed to provide student-athletes with a competitive basketball environment and experience, while allowing the opportunity for learning, development, and growth.
Is the Renton Select Basketball program affiliated with the Renton School District?
Renton Select Basketball aims to support students in the Renton School District, but is not an official affiliate or representative of the Renton School District. The Renton Select Basketball program is an independent community based non-profit organization.
What are the COVID protocols?
Renton Select Basketball will follow the COVID guidelines set forth by Governor Inslee and the CDC, following COVID protocols consistent with those used and followed by the Renton School District.
Who can play for the Renton Select Basketball program?
The Renton Select Basketball program is designed for student-athletes (preferably) residing in the Renton School District service area. Student-athletes not residing in the Renton School District service area ARE welcome and allowed to try-out and participate if selected.
When are try-outs? How do I register my student-athlete(s) to tryout? Does my student-athlete need to attend each day of try-outs? What if my student-athlete cannot attend either day of try-outs?
The Renton Select Basketball program tryout information can be found under the Renton Select tab under tryouts. To register your student-athlete(s) for tryouts please visit www.rentonbasketball.com/try-outs. It is strongly recommended that student-athlete's attend each offered day of tryouts to ensure the best opportunity of potentially being selected. If your student-athlete has a conflict and is unable to attend try-outs please contact rentonselectbasketball@gmail.com and the Renton Select board will review it on a case by case basis making arrangements if possible.
How are teams selected? Can my student-athlete play above grade level?
For each grade level there will be a tryout consisting of basic skill drills and scrimmaging. Renton Select Basketball staff and coaches will evaluate each student-athlete during try-outs. Following the tryout, the Renton Select Basketball staff and grade level coaches will work collaboratively to select the team(s) and families will be notified via e-mail if their student-athlete was or was not selected to a team within 48 hours. Each student-athlete must tryout at their grade level. If a student-athlete has talent that exceeds their grade level, the placement will be at the discretion of the Renton Select board. If a team is not offered at a grade level and a student-athlete possesses the ability, the Renton Select board will make the determination if the student-athlete is able to play above grade level.
How many teams are there? How many student-athletes per team? How are teams classified?
The number of teams will be dependent upon the number of student-athletes that tryout and are selected to a team per grade level. Each Renton Select Basketball team will have a minimum of eight (8) and maximum of ten (10) student-athletes per team. If there are enough student-athletes to form more than one competitive team at a grade level, then an additional team may be formed. If there is more than one team in a grade level, they will be classified as "red" (A) and "white" (B). At the 15U-17U levels we will only offer one team.
What leagues/tournaments does Renton Select Basketball play in? Do teams travel? Can my student - athlete play for Renton Select Basketball and another program?
The Renton Select Basketball staff works collaboratively with coaches to determine appropriate placement of teams in leagues and/or tournaments. Note, the availability of leagues/tournaments will vary for 2nd and 3rd grade teams. There is potential for each team to travel, this will happen on a team-by-team basis, and be communicated in as far advance as possible. Traveling tournaments will entail additional costs not included in the Renton Select Basketball participation fee and is optional. The 15U-17U teams will travel. We prefer that student - athlete's choose to prioritize our program if selected, as failure to fully commit may impact practice/game attendance and may impact student-athletes' playing time.
Is there a playing time protocol?
Yes. The playing time protocol is as follows:
2nd - 5th Grade Red & White: One quarter per game
6th - 8th Grade Red: No playing time protocol
6th - 8th Grade White: One quarter per game
15U - 17U: No playing time protocol
*For travel (overnight) or extra (those beyond the ones included in the participation fee) tournaments there is not a playing time protocol
Each session, our coaches will make a concerted effort to afford student-athletes meaningful playing time during each game that exceeds the playing time protocol minimum. Note, during extra tournaments (outside of the ones provided via the Renton Select participation fee) there is not a playing time protocol - this applies to all grade levels in all seasons.
How many seasons are there?
The Renton Select Basketball program offers two sessions. A winter session from October - February for 2nd - 8th grade and a combined spring session from March - May for 2nd - 8th grade, and a summer session from May - July for select grades.15U - 17U will be March - May and July (nothing in June). The summer season is designed to be highly competitive, there will not be a tryout for the summer session, and rosters will be formed at the coaches discretion. The Renton Select board will decide which teams continue on for the summer season (not all teams will compete in the summer).
When and where are the practices?
The Renton Select Basketball program practice schedule will be determined following tryouts. The practices will be at a Renton School District facility.
What is the cost to participate in the Renton Select Basketball program? What is included? Is there a payment plan available? Are there scholarships?
The cost will include/cover a game uniform (jersey, shorts, shirt & socks), practice uniform (jersey & shorts), league/tournament fees (1 league & 2 tournaments or 4-6 tournaments), and administrative fees (practice facilities, equipment, insurance, etc.). AAU card ($16) and travel expenses are not included in the participation fee.
The cost to participate on the Renton Select Basketball program 2nd or 3rd grade team is $350 per season per student-athlete. If a student-athlete has a game uniform from the previous session they will be wearing the cost is $300. Due to inconsistent league/tournament availability at this grade level, cost may vary. If a student-athlete participated with Renton Select during Winter/Spring/Summer 2021-2022, the uniform they had will be used as the practice and game uniform, and a new one will only need to be purchased if the student-athlete would like/needs a new one.
The base cost to participate on a Renton Select Basketball program 4th - 8th grade team is $600 per season per student-athlete. If a student-athlete has a usable game uniform from the previous session they will be wearing the cost is $500. If your student-athlete's team plays in additional tournaments or travels, there will be an additional costs beyond the base cost.
The base cost to participate on a Renton Select Basketball program 15U - 17U team is $600. If a student-athlete has a uniform from the previous season they will be wearing the cost is $500. Our 15U - 17U teams will participate in an independent circuit, as well as local tournaments. The 15U - 17U teams will travel and there will be an additional costs beyond the base cost.
The Renton Select Basketball program does offer monthly payment plans. The Renton Select Basketball program does not have the ability to offer scholarships, but we do offer fundraising options. Note, failure to submit payment plan payments on-time will result in your student-athlete be ineligible to participate in practices or games.
Does my student-athlete have to play for the Renton Select Basketball program to participate in the Renton Select Basketball training program?
No. Renton Select Basketball training is available to all student-athletes. Additional training information can be found under the training tab.
What is the Renton Select Basketball program refund policy?
Once a student-athlete is selected and parents/guardians make a payment, the Renton Select Basketball program immediately begins the process of ordering uniforms, paying league/tournament fees, and other miscellaneous costs. For these reasons, once payment is submitted there is a no refund policy. In the event the program's season is modified or cancelled due to COVID or a circumstance beyond our control, refunds will be returned on a pro-rated basis. In the event a team folds due to not having enough participants, refunds will be returned on a pro-rated basis.
